Using the Postal Charges Book - Calculating Postage

Letters  within Australia

  1. Go to letters within Australia

  2. The cost of the letter will depend on its size (dimensions), shape thickness, weight and Christmas Cards

For Example:

Using the 2002 prices:

  • a small letter, ordinary post, delivered within Australia costs 45c

  • a large letter, ordinary post, delivered within Australia costs $2.45

  1. There are also special prices for prepaid envelopes.

International Post

  1. Go the International Post Letters in the booklet

  2. There are a variety of charges depending on the type of mail, weight, size, destination and thickness

For example:

Using the 2002 prices:

  • Air mail letters up to 50g going to the Asia / Pacific region cost $1.10

  • A prepaid envelope DL size weighing 50g and 5mm thick will cost $1.80

Parcels

  1. Go to Parcels Post - Distance Charges in the Booklet

  2. Find the destination's zone by it's postcode

  3. Go to the next page. Here you will find the Basic Charge and the Distance Charge. Calculate the Basic Charge first based on whether the parcel is going to the same state or interstate

  4. Now it is time to calculate the Distance Charge. Find the place of lodgement (ie where the mail will be posted) then go across the row until you come to the column with the correct destination code. This will give you the charge per kilo.

NB if a parcel is 2.4kg it will be classified as 3kg - it will always be rounded up.

A Sample:

Using the 2002 booklet, a 2kg parcel mailed in Sydney and destined for Adelaide will cost:

Basic Charge   = $7.00
          +
Distance Charge
80c X 2kg $1.60
Total Postage $8.60
