A) External Factors like:

B) Internal Factors like:

Many of these factors will be covered in this unit.

The External Business Environment

The external business environment is made up of all the things OUTSIDE the organisation/ business that have an impact on the business. An effective business must be aware of these factors and make the necessary changes. As a worker/ employee of an organisation you must also be aware of these factors.

The diagram below shows you some of them.

Government Legislation

Government in Australia is divided into 3 levels:

Each level of government has its own responsibilities. Sometimes this is not clear-cut as they overlap. Different workers can be covered by different legislation. In this unit you will examine the key work based legislation from the Commonwealth and State governments.

The Office: A key role in the business's organisation

Businesses organise themselves in various ways. This is often determined by the:

An important function of management is to plan. This is set out in the form of a business plan. Basically a business plan sets out the objectives of the business and how it intends to achieve them.

Now tryTask 3

Who is responsible for planning?

Businesses have management structures which exist to make sure the business plan happens!

Take the case of Pablo and his business 'PABLO REFRESH'.

Pablo has great plans. His idea is to run a morning tea service to offices- right to

peoples’ desks. Cappuccinos, pastries, freshly squeezed juice- the lot! His zany personality also brightens peoples’ workday

The business is up and running in no time. Pablo has one other part-time worker (his mate Fabio) to help out in the busy times. His business structure is very simple.

It is not long before 'PABLO REFRESH' is in demand. Pablo is struggling to meet these demands so he employs 2 more part-time staff.

Fabio becomes full-time and helps organise the clients and staff roster.

Pablo works longer hours. The paperwork is done at home at night. What a bore!

Well the smell of success has lead to an absolute bonanza for Pablo. So much so that he decides he needs more help. Too many nights are tied up with paperwork.

Pablo thinks Fabio works well with the staff and is a good organiser so he is going to take over the day-to-day running of “PABLO REFRESH”. This will leave Pablo the time he needs for the bigger decisions and THAT paperwork.

By now the business has grown and the staff have been organised in a structured way. Pablo is no fool. He weighs up the options available to him.

Take a look at his options. Which would you choose if you were Pablo?

Notice how far away Pablo is from the actual day-to-day workings of the business (ie the workers).

Have you thought of an answer?

Option 2 is looking good!

Pablo has learnt in his business management course at TAFE that using a flatter organisation helps him “keep his finger on the pulse” more closely. He is in constant contact with all aspects of the business and staff.

The office plays an integral part in the smooth running of the business.

Employees and Employers Rights and Responsibilities

The workplace is all about Rights and Responsibilities.

Employee rights and responsibilities include:

Employer rights and responsibilities in many ways are like a mirror image of employee’s rights and responsibilities. However, there are some differences.

These include:
