Task 4
Instructions: The following task is to be submitted to your teacher in one of the two ways described below.
The Skills of each Team member
Read the following scenario, then complete the task.
Bill is in the process of forming a team to organise the conference. It is important to him to get the best team possible, as this conference will reflect on the business and himself. The first thing he does is talk to potential team members, tell them about the mission and listen to what they have to say. He finds that 7 staff have displayed interest and look forward to being involved- these are Byron, Anthea, Barbara, Don, Grant, Bianca and Linda. Bill now looks at each team member to see if they are resourceful. Next he looks at their skills - technical AND personal- to see where he can match-up team member skills to needs. He keeps in mind however that intelligence & experience can overcome a lack of skills.
When putting together a team Bill wants a range of points of view- he is keen to have some “new blood” in the team with fresh ideas and attitude. Having a diverse team is important.
Team size is a concern. He doesn’t want it too big, as communication will be extremely important in the lead-up to the conference. He decides on a team of 5, including himself. This means he will need to eliminate 3 potential staff, who expressed an interest. This is a worry, as he doesn’t want to eliminate a possible critical team member. Finally he decides to eliminate Bianca, Grant and Anthea.
The first step for the team is to have a meeting. He sets an agenda containing the items that need to be discussed.
At the meeting, each team member keeps a diary. This is a great way of keeping track of discussion. Team skills should be shared and group dynamics need to be established. At all times the team is conscious that they must produce a high quality and successful conference.
After reading the scenario answer these questions in the spaces provided.1. Write down the steps Bill took to select a team.
2. Give reasons why co-operation and relationships will be important in Bill’s team.
3. Why will it be important for the team to be aware or their organisation’s policies, business plans and procedures when organising the conference?
4. In what ways will each team member be accountable?
5. Why would issues like anti-discrimination and equity be important when selecting a team? The unit: "Working Effectively in the Business Environment” covers these issues in detail.
