Types of Hazards

Hazards are identified as:

Chemical

A large number of chemicals are used in the workplace

eg's photocopiers and correction fluid

 

Physical

There are many physical hazards in an office. These include:

  • temperature

  • humidity (high and low)

  • Poor ventilation

  • Poor lighting

  • Noise - noisy equipment

  • Electricity - frayed / damaged cables, liquids kept near electrical equipment

  • Storage areas - eg filing cabinets top heavy

Psychological

Examples include:

  • substance abuse (alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, tranquilisers)

  • stress related problems like depression

 

Ergonomic

Ergonomics takes into account the bodily needs of the worker.

  • Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS)

  • Workstations

  • Posture

  • Work Practices - safe lifting and handling techniques
