Task 8
Instructions: The following task is to be submitted to your teacher in one of the two ways described below.
Performance Appraisal
Remember the process:
1. Conducting the appraisal with a mentor or supervisor– to determine strengths & weaknesses
2. Modifying behaviour – that addresses the strengths/weaknesses identified in 1.
3. Evaluating the success of the appraisal – did it produce the desired outcome for the team member and the mentor/supervisor?
Read
the case study about Lara then complete the tasks.
Lara works for Johnston International, a large national organisation. Lara is persistently late, often doesn’t turn up to meetings – even with clients – and has taken excessive sick leave (when it was known she did other work).
This situation did not suddenly happen, but gradually developed over a number of years. It became increasingly difficult to do anything about it, and managers dreaded this member of staff moving into their section.
Other staff – who knew the true situation- used her as a defence when being disciplined themselves: “How does she get away with it when I’m not allowed to? It’s unfair.”
It is clear that Johnston International did not conduct performance appraisals with their staff and in particular with staff who had certain needs (ie Lara).
Even if Lara is dealt with, the organisation is weakened because other staff will repeat the behaviour.
Lara on a good day
It is your job as Lara’s immediate supervisor to conduct a performance appraisal on her. This will be the first step in an over-all feedback process for Lara.
It will involve:
The completion of a performance appraisal form
An appraisal interview
A follow-up feedback session after a set period to see if new goals and strategies have been attained.
This task only expects you to complete the following:
1. During the interview you discuss Lara’s strengths and weaknesses. You have already made a list of these. What are they? (you will need to create some as well as use the information in the box)
Lara’s strengths Lara’s weaknesses Q2
Q2
2. During the interview Lara adds to the list. Add 1 item for each side of the table above.
3. During the interview, you try to give positive messages about what behaviour is acceptable and what will happen if Lara continues to break the rules. Outline what you are going to say to her.
4. It is important you listen to her side of the situation (show empathy). What does Lara say about this problem? Remember: she wants to keep her job.
5. Together you devise a plan that includes 5 realistic goals for Lara to achieve by the end of next month. What are they?
6. You must ‘rate’ Lara’s current performance on the following elements. Is she:
Elements
Unsatisfactory Reasonable Good Excellent Outstanding Customer Service Effectiveness Flexibility Leadership Planning / Organisation Effort Quality of work Team work / Peer relations Responsiveness Urgency / Work under pressure
7. What impact will this FORMAL performance appraisal have on the rest of the staff?
