Find it (Hazard identification)

Hazards are anything with the potential to harm life, health or property. Hazards are the main identifiable cause of workplace health and safety problems, Work hazards include:

machinery that can cause injuries

chemicals which can make you ill

noise which can damage your hearing

electrical hazards

poor work design

poor management systems and procedures

human behaviour.

Check it out (Workplace assessment)

Once hazards have been found then you can work out how serious they are. If it is a hazard that is likely to cause death or serious injury, then it should be fixed immediately. If it is unlikely to cause serious injury, it can wait till later. There are many types of hazards -physical, chemical and biological for example, and methods for assessing them will differ.

A few general points need to be considered however, when assessing hazards. There could be more than one cause exposure (frequency and duration) severity -a severe effect may even include death, permanent disability or cancer human differences.

The assessment of hazards can be a complex task and can involve expert technical analysis such as air analysis, exposure level readings. In many cases it may require the involvement of consultants to undertake such assessments. However you should be aware that this is a major process in making a workplace safe.

Get it fixed (Risk control)

There is a "hierarchy of control": This means that there are some ways of fixing hazards which are more effective than others. The most effective methods are at the top of the list while the least effective are at the bottom .

design out the hazard

eliminate or substitute a less hazardous material/equipment

change the process

enclose or isolate the process

provide other controls such as effective ventilation

provide training on hazards and safe working procedures.

establish suitable administrative procedures such as job rotation to reduce exposure

provide suitable and properly maintained personal protective equipment (PPE) and training in its use. Note that PPE does not get rid of the hazard. If you spot a hazard: go to the boss, the union or WorkCover NSW.
