Rules for Alphabetical Filing
file by surname (last name) eg Betty Lydia Black becomes Black, Betty Lydia
file by initials where the last name is the same eg Black Betty is before Black Bob.
Initials come before a first name eg Black B comes before Black, Betty.
Ignore titles like Mrs, Mr, Sir, Dr etc.
Joining words like “the”, “and” are ignored eg The Grand Store will be found under Grand Store.
Hyphenated or prefixed names are treated as one eg Six-Smith becomes Sixsmith and Von Brueller becomes Vonbrueller.
Names beginning with Mac and Mc are grouped together, but where there are names the same except for the Mac and Mc, then Mac will come first.
Abbreviation are treated as full words eg St Angela is Saint Angela
Where a persons full name is the businesses name, it is treated the same way as a name eg Barbara Bronson Enterprise becomes Bronson, Barbara Enterprises.
Numbers are treated the way they are spelt eg 6 becomes six
Nothing comes before something! Eg Johns comes before Johnston
