About Gallipoli and the Anzacs

Gallipoli and the Anzacs is a multimedia resource produced by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs as part of the Australian Government’s Commemorations program.

The resource provides teachers and students with classroom-ready materials and teaching activities about the experiences of the Anzacs (Australians and New Zealanders) at Gallipoli in 1915, as well as the involvement of the Turkish, British, French and other Allied forces in the campaign.

The resource comprises three elements:

  • Teachers’ Guidebook of photocopiable print resource
  • DVD-ROM with ten interactive activities, and a copy of the ABC’s 3-D website Gallipoli: The First Day
  • DVD-VIDEO containing two documentary films: Australians at War Episode 2 and Revealing Gallipoli.

All units include a variety of information and evidence — including primary and secondary source materials. Much of the evidence is pictorial, including photographs, maps, drawings and sketches, paintings and cartoons. Questions have been included as signposts or scaffolding to help students draw out the implications and meanings of the evidence.

Through the activities and investigations students are encouraged to understand why the Gallipoli campaign has been important to past generations, and to reflect on Gallipoli as part of building our national identity, particularly among young people.
